Hamish McGregor; "highlight of the show!"

Lead performer in Les Misérables at Auckland’s famous Civic Theatre, Hamish McGregor, joins Operatunity once again for 100 Glorious Years of Song January 13 - February 14 2020!

Performing the role of Thénardier, Hamish performed his rendition of ‘Master of the House’ to great acclaim, with reviewers describing him as a “highlight of the show”. The preparation process for such a role is a rather different artistic journey to that of an Operatunity concert tour. He says “...with a show like 'Les Mis' it’s a character journey. For me, exploring a character and what makes them tick is one of the greatest things about performing. I get to map a journey for the character and really play in an imaginary world. With an Operatunity tour, you get to do that but to a smaller scale by creating a story within the 3 or 4 minutes you have to perform each number.”

The production scale of a fully staged musical compared to a touring concert performance is of course quite a contrast. McGregor says “With touring we are doing everything, set up, driving, costumes etc. Whereas something like 'Les Mis' has over 50 people behind the scenes along with the 50 or so on stage.” What remains is the pervasive sense of whanau and working together to create the best result.

When asked if he prefers performing in a big production such as Les Misérables to a touring production such as those with Operatunity, McGregor says that there are pros and cons. Whilst he says he loves touring our beautiful country with people he loves and performing for such wonderful and giving audiences, life on the road does come with its challenges including being away from one’s own bed weeks at a time.

McGregor will demonstrate the range of his talents as he performs the greatest hits of the 20th Century in 100 Glorious Years of Song, featuring famous songs from all the different eras of the 20th century with sentimentality, silliness and lots of costumes and glitz! He will be joined by Sue, Karl, Alex Milligan, Kelly Harris and pianist Paul.

Touring New Zealand January 13 to February 14, 2020. Some of our venues sold out just a month after our launch in August 2019, so don’t delay in securing your ticket!
