Christmas is a time to spread joy love and peace, and what better way to do so than through the gift of music. Violinist Jessica Hindin, Cellist Rachel Wells, and Trumpeter Mike Booth make up the small orchestral ensemble for Operatunity’s Christmas at the Proms concert spreading Christmas cheer to seniors across New Zealand.
The silly season is full of special memories for our musicians. Violinist Jess recalls her favorite childhood gift, a BMZ push bike – “I grew up on a farm and there was a lot of space and freedom to cycle for hours and hours in all directions.” As for Rachel’s favourite, a big Tupperware container of homemade fudge from her sister takes first place, whilst for Mike the Matchbox toys he received as a boy fill him with nostalgia.
All three are looking forward to spending time with their families over Christmas, a much-needed relief after five weeks away from home on tour! It’s a particularly special Christmas for Mike as his family gathering will be focussed on his 94-year-old father in law. Rachel is looking forward to spending time at her parent’s house by the sea “talking about food, making food, playing board games, swimming, napping, doing jigsaws. Candles, carols and playing music round the piano.” Jess is excited to be hosting all her extended cousins and family for the first time ever – “I’ve built on the property I grew up on in Waiwera and the building has finally been completed, so all the family are returning to the farm.”
With such a big task at hand Jess is putting a call out – “I’m going to have to learn how to cook for them won’t I? Oh dear...how many weeks have I got until Christmas Day to figure that out? Any tips from anyone coming to the Christmas concert on the best turkey stuffing, or any tried and true trifles would be most appreciated!”
